Third places are a real thing. Sociologist Ray Oldenburg coined the term while spending his career studying spots that aren’t home and aren’t work, where people gather freely, status doesn't matter, and conversation is the whole point. He was writing about cafes and barbershops, not art schools and galleries, but the description fits almost too well.
A third place is neutral ground. Nobody has to perform. There are regulars who set the tone and welcome whoever walks in that day. Low barrier, low pretension, high warmth.

Nobody's grading you at the door. The person who's been coming since before we opened and the person walking in for the first time are standing at the same wall, looking at the same art.
Oldenburg's argument was that modern life has quietly stripped these spaces out of most people's weeks — and that the loss shows up as isolation, not just inconvenience. Which might be part of why the feeling is so noticeable when a space like ours actually works: it's filling a gap most people didn't realize was there.
