Can the Gallery space be rented by artists?
No. Our gallery exhibitions are by invitation only.
What kind of art do you teach at Shapeshifter Art School?
We teach the many languages of making - drawing, painting (in watercolor, gouache, ink, and water-based oil), textiles (weaving, stitching, and 3D forms) writing as artistic practice, and performance. Our programs also include independent study, critique, art theory, professional practices, book studies, and hand-built ceramics. Every discipline is a way of seeing; at ShapeShifter, we invite them to speak to one another.
What are the different programs or courses you offer?
We offer three-, four-, five- and six-week classes. In addition, we offer short workshops and immersive one-week intensives - and soon, off-campus retreats where ideas can stretch beyond the studio. Our programming is designed for cross-pollination: painters learning from performers, sculptors from writers, teachers from students. Creativity grows strongest where disciplines meet.
What are the tuition fees and are there any payment plans or financial aid options available?
You can use Shop Pay at checkout to break your tuition into smaller payments over time. While we don’t yet offer financial aid, it’s something we’re hoping to offer as ShapeShifter continues to grow and we strengthen our resources.
Do I need prior art experience to enroll in your courses/workshops?
Experience isn’t a barrier here — curiosity is the only prerequisite. Each class lists its skill level, from beginner to advanced, inviting artists at every stage to enter the conversation and expand their practice.
What is the teaching philosophy at Shapeshifter Art School?
Within our community, we will:
- Dismantle hierarchies: We embrace shared leadership and horizontal knowledge sharing, recognizing that everyone has something valuable to contribute.
- Encourage critical engagement: We promote collaborative exploration and debate to foster a deeper understanding of our art.
- Nurture creative courage: We provide the tools, resources, and support for teachers and students to experiment, take risks, and discover their own originality.
- Champion Instructors: We support our faculty, comprised of accomplished artists and educators with a demonstrated commitment to both pedagogical excellence and continued professional development.
Are the classrooms accessible?
- Our two-story building features two classrooms located on the ground floor, which are fully accessible in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines and one classroom located on the second floor which is accessible via stairs only. Currently, there is no elevator available in this building.
- We understand that the lack of elevator access to the second-floor classroom may present a challenge for individuals with mobility impairments. To ensure equal access to educational opportunities, we are committed to providing reasonable accommodations for any individual who is unable to climb stairs.
About our website...
Our website is a living digital space, growing alongside our community. What you see now is Phase I — built to support enrollment for our Winter 2026 launch. Phase II, coming March 1, will open new doors: gallery listings, student spotlights, a shop featuring our artists’ work, and our favorite addition — a resources page for everyone who’s part of the ShapeShifter circle. It will include articles, art calls, a founders’ blog, and a digital catalog of our ever-expanding library.
