Paper, scissors, glue: ACTIVATE! Explore paper collage through a playful, curious, and hands-on approach, using the things that bring you joy as inspiration for dynamic compositions. Working spontaneously, students will create multiple small collages while experimenting with the colors, textures, and shapes of beloved plants, animals, foods, and places.

Class time will also include designing and constructing a larger collage that brings together techniques and details developed in the smaller works. By the end of the course, students will leave with multiple small collages and one larger finished piece. Students are encouraged to bring personal paper materials to add to the supplies provided.

This workshop is well suited for beginners and also offers experienced collagers a chance to refresh their skills, try new approaches, and expand their creative practice.

About the Instructor

Justin Bowles

Creating space for viewers to experience and access joy is the goal of Memphis artist Justin Bowles’ work. Justin creates collages, sculptures, and fantasy environments that energize and create harmonious spaces. Inspired by flea market finds, 1980s science fiction, and dollar-store kitsch, her work speaks of the joy we cultivate through collecting and decorating. Greater than the sum of its parts, Justin’s work speaks to viewers with vivid colors, a sense of humor, and nostalgia.

Justin has shown her work at TOPS Gallery Madison Park, Dixon Gallery and Gardens, and was a 2024 recipient of the UrbanArts Commission New Public Artist Fellowship. You can see her window display and merchandise designs for Lansky Brothers at The Peabody Hotel in downtown Memphis.

Justin earned her BFA in Sculpture from the University of Kansas and moved to Memphis in 2012 to attend Memphis College of Art, earning her MFA in Studio Art. With over twenty years of experience working in K-12 and higher education, Justin loves learning alongside students, as well as supporting each student’s unique abilities and creativity. Justin currently works at Frame Corner, restoring and framing clients’ beloved artwork. Explore her work at www.justinbowles.com
