In this course, students will be introduced to the basic mechanics of transparent watercolor, including brush movement, washes, wet-on-wet, glazing, and extensive color theory using transparent media.

Students will begin the course with a collection of simple, easy-to-follow exercises to learn how paint-to-water ratios work and the advantages of specific brushes. In addition, students will be introduced to a variety of watercolor surfaces such as cold press, hot press, and Yupo. Afterward, students will begin a series of watercolor paintings, pursuing a subject matter of their choosing.  

Whether you’re brand-new to watercolor or looking to refresh your skills, this friendly, supportive class will help you build confidence, spark creativity, and enjoy the magic of watercolor.

About the Instructor

Kelly Cook

Kelly Cook is a native of Tennessee and has spent her career dedicated to the art community of Memphis. Cook holds a BFA from Memphis College of Art, a MFA from the University of Memphis, and aMAT in Art Education. In addition to teaching full-time for St. Mary's Episcopal School, she also taught Drawing and Painting courses for the University of Memphis from 2016-2025. She has also previously taught for Christian Brothers University and organized private art tutoring to young people across the Mid-South.

Cook is the recipient of the RiverARTS scholarship, the Presidential Purchase Award at the University of Memphis, and was nominated as a Semifinalist for the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery’s Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition in 2022.
