In this course, students will learn how to use color theory in transparent layers in order to build skin tones in watercolor. A combination of photo references and live models will be used to introduce traditional figure painting techniques, build confidence in color theory, and use the spontaneous nature of watercolor to experiment with movement. Students should have prior experience with watercolor in order to take full advantage of this course.

Four week class, meets once a week for three hours

About the Instructor

Kelly Cook

Kelly Cook is a native of Tennessee and has spent her career dedicated to the art community of Memphis. Cook holds a BFA from Memphis College of Art, a MFA from the University of Memphis, and aMAT in Art Education. In addition to teaching full-time for St. Mary's Episcopal School, she also taught Drawing and Painting courses for the University of Memphis from 2016-2025. She has also previously taught for Christian Brothers University and organized private art tutoring to young people across the Mid-South.

Cook is the recipient of the RiverARTS scholarship, the Presidential Purchase Award at the University of Memphis, and was nominated as a Semifinalist for the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery’s Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition in 2022.
